He was born on August 18, 1942, to Frank and Frances Woodword Schmidt in Long Beach, California. In 1949 the family moved to beautiful Mackay, Idaho where they worked hard on the family farm and The Cottonwood Grove Pavilion and Campground.
Bill, as he was known by family and friends, graduated from Mackay High School in 1960. He then attended the University of Idaho and became a lifelong Vandals fan.
During Vietnam Bill was called to serve his country in the Army. He was deployed to Vietnam where he was stationed as a firefighter at Cam Ranh Bay. After receiving an honorable discharge for his service, Bill began working for the United States Forest Service.

After 33 years of loyal service with the Rural Electric Association, Bill retired in 1997. He enjoyed his retirement and spent the rest of his life in peace and happiness.
Bill was a devoted husband, father, loyal friend, and a proud veteran. He cherished time with family, friends and the many deer and other animals who visited him often. I have only good memories with Bill!
I met him while helping do a remodel job on his house and he hired me on as his housekeeper.
I may have started out as a housekeeper but Bill became family to us.
My girls would come with me and he would teach them to tie flys and then how to fly fish.
My youngest daughter Jayla was supposed to come with to clean (her and Bill had plans to go hunting ducks and geese) but she decided to sleep in… about a half hour into me cleaning Bill says “Let’s go hunting?”
So of course we went hunting.
I got my first Goose that day, and Bill even got in the river and retrieved it for me.
This is just one of many wonderful memories I have with my friend Bill.
Thank you so very much for being my friend/family and Sharing your little piece of heaven with us!
Bill & Jill were at all of our sporting events..
Bill filmed us all.. you never knew when that camera was rolling.. I use to hang out with Both Cody and Chris as we were all school mates.. We all played baseball together too..
Bill was a pillar to our close knit Community of Mackay!! We will miss you.. To the best film maker out there..
love
