Alan J. “Jake” Amy

Alan J. "Jake" Amy passed away peacefully surrounded by his wife and family in Arco, ID on August 7, 2021.

Jake was born in Arco, ID on July 31, 1935, to parents Jess and Hazel Amy. Though officially named Alan Jess, his dad nicknamed him "Jake" early on, and thus the name he was known by to almost everyone. A typical youngest child, Jake was catered to by his older sisters and brother.

Jake attended grade school at the one-room schoolhouse in Clyde. He was very proud of being both valedictorian and salutatorian of the 8th grade- a not as widely spoken about the fact- he was the only 8th grader!

Jake attended high school in Arco, it was in his junior year that he met the prettiest girl in school (he thought) Afton Louise Burton. Jake and Afton were married on June 30th, 1953 in St. Anthony at the home of Jesse Lyons.

Jake loved horses and started riding horses with his siblings at an early age. Horses and horse-related activities were a continuous theme throughout his lifetime. He rode horses, packed horses, rodeoed, chariot raced and team sorted just to name a few. He judged many rodeos and held judging cards for three different rodeo associations: ICA, EIRA, and Old Timers.

While Jake spent a few years finding his place and exploring work opportunities in Cobalt, ID, and Montana, his home for 60 plus years was under Bell Mountain in Clyde, ID. Beginning in 1959 Jake and Afton together worked their ranch and raised their 4 children Delwin, Calvin, Juanita, and Loretta. Later they expanded their operation to include entertaining friends and family at the Amy Park and operating their hydropower plant.

What a legacy, what a life, what a ride! Jake leaves his wife of 68 years, Afton, his children, his brother Leo, 12 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Special thanks to Salmon Valley Hospice and Lori Palmer and her staff for their care and loving assistance with Jake's transition.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 14, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. at the Little Lost River Bible Church in Howe, Idaho. A viewing will be held for one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in the Clyde Cemetery under the direction of the Anderson Family Funeral Home in Arco.
